Sleep Aids for a Good Night’s Sleep

Stress at work or worrying over certain things may be causing your Insomnia, that it is why it is very important that you feel relaxed before dozing off. There are a lot of things that will not put you in a relaxing disposition. Light for example will keep your mind away so it is good for you to try covering your eyes. A good sleep aid would be an eye mask that will cover your eyes. And it is also good to make sure that no light enters through your windows. Heavy drapes and dark curtains will certainly do the trick. A lot of people may not know that their sleeping environment can be one of the reasons why it is difficult for them to get some sleep. Before you go to bed, make your room as cozy as possible. Maybe all you need is a new mattress of some pillows that can give your body the support that it needs during the night.

To prepare yourself for some sleep time, try listening to music. Stay away from the kind of music that will keep you up such as rock music. Get some background or ambient music that is soothing and calming such as sounds of rhythmic drumming, falling rain, ocean waves crashing, or birds chirping. Aside from music, another sleeping aid would be warm drinks. Hot milk or caffeine-free Chamomile tea can make you feel relaxed and can even lessen your feelings of stress. Stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine should be avoided if you want to get some sleep.

Also, try breathing in scents that can put you in a state of relaxation such as Lavender which is believed to be helpful in putting the body into sleep and also in easing tension. A warm bath using soaps and bath gels containing Lavender can be done before going to sleep. Or you can try other sleeping aid techniques such as meditation and acupuncture to treat your sleepless nights.

Another type of sleeping aid is in the form of sleeping pills that may be bought over the counter or it may be prescribed by a doctor. Over-the-counter sleeping pills contain antihistamine, which provides short-term relief, but taking these pills will not solve the underlying problem. As for prescription sleep medications, there are a number of options which can be classified into the following: short-acting sedative-hypnotics, melatonin receptor agonists, tranquilizers, and antidepressants.

But not all medications are said to be safe like for people who have liver or kidney problems, or those who are pregnant. There are also some side effects when taking pills such as drowsiness, dizziness and even constipation may be experienced. Therefore, before buying sleeping pills, it is better to consult with your doctor first, even though there are a lot of over-the-counter options for you out there. You will need a thorough evaluation of your sleeping problem so that your doctor can point out what causes your Insomnia, and can provide you with treatment options that would be best for you.
