Sleep Deprivation
It is only understandable that sleep deprivation is bad for one’s health because with this, a person does not have the necessary amount of sleep. And we all know that we need to have enough rest after a whole day’s work. Most adults are required to have 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. We need to have enough quality sleep so that we can be alert during the day especially while we are working. If we do not get enough sleep, we will get sleepy and we put our work to risk.
Sleep deprivation may be the result of a conscious inducement like torture, active choice, depression and excessive worrying or sleep disorders such as sleepwalking and sleep apnea. Sometimes, sleep deprivation may be the result of not being able to work during regular working hours. People who work night shifts or travel across time zones are the most common people made miserable by sleep deprivation.
Sleep deprivation is common nowadays and the most common cause of this problem may be the fast paced lifestyle that causes us to stay awake all the time and not get all the sleep that we need. The other reason why we may get this problem is because of some sleeping disorders that we may get afflicted with. Most people do not find sleep deprivation a serious condition, but don’t be one of them! Sleep deprivation can negatively impact one’s life if remained untreated.
Since sleep is very important to a person’s well-being, a lack thereof may become fatal. Without enough rest, one’s mental health deteriorates. The brain works hard to counter the effects of sleep deprivation. Because of this, the concentration level of a person drops and his memory is weakened. His ability to solve problems is also affected and making decisions may now seem to be difficult for him. Inadequate rest may also cause him to hallucinate. Other known effects of sleep deprivation are heart disease, depression, irritability, hypertension, tremors and slurred speech.
But how can we cure sleep deprivation on our own? We first have to understand what causes us to be deprived of sleep. In general however, we can do something about this. If you are constantly stressed, which causes you to have insomnia; you must change your lifestyle.
Work out or engage in sports! An increased physical activity will boost not only one’s energy, but also one’s sleep. Exercising is a very healthy practice because it plays a very important role in your fight against insomnia or sleep deprivation.
Avoid alcohol. Although alcohol or other sedative drugs may help us get to sleep, they may disturb our sleeping patterns and waking up will not be a good feeling. Try to sleep at the same time each and every night. It may also help if you have the same ritual before going to bed. Do not drink coffee before bedtime. If within 30 minutes you’re not yet asleep, get up and drink your milk or consume a banana as this will increase your serotonin level, which helps you control sleep.
